Shivapuri Day Hiking Itinerary: Route Options
The day starts with a comfortable drive from your hotel in Thamel or anywhere else in Kathmandu. One of Radiant Treks’ representatives will meet you right at your doorstep and escort you in a private vehicle. It’s about a 30 to 45-minute ride. But this is long enough to watch the busy city streets fade into quiet suburbs and green foothills as you head toward Budhanilkantha.
Upon arrival at Budhanilkantha, home to a stone statue of Lord Vishnu reclining on a serpent, you may take a short visit to this site revered by Hindu pilgrims. Next, head to Panimuhan, the entrance to Shivapuri National Park. It is located a few minutes away from the temple.
The Radiant Treks’ guide will handle all the formalities here. While they efficiently manage the park permits and registration, you can take a moment to stretch and breathe in the cleaner air.
Afterward, your guide will brief you on the day's route, safety protocols, timing, as well as 'Leave No Trace' principles. This ritual is essential as it will make you prepared and comfortable before the hike begins.
Nonetheless, depending on your time, fitness level and interests, the guide will help you choose between two classic routes. One is the gentle forest trail to Bishnudwar. And the other is the longer and more adventurous climb to Baghdwar.
Kathmandu Elevation: 1,400m
Bishnudwar Elevation: 1,950m
Elevation Gain: 550m
Hike Duration: 4 to 6 hours (round trip)
The hike to Bishnudwar offers a full dose of nature and spirituality without requiring a full day’s strenuous effort. The journey begins at the Panimuhan gate in Budhanilkantha, where you start the ascent. The route passes through a lush, subtropical forest.
As you move forward, you realize the sounds of the city being replaced by birdsong and the rustle of leaves in the fresh air. The trail climbs steadily. As such, you walk deep into a beautiful forest of pine and rhododendron. Your guide will pace the walk comfortably, allowing for short breaks in between.
In about 90 minutes into the Shivapuri day hike, you reach the Nagi Gompa. This Buddhist nunnery is a sanctuary of peace. The sight of colorful prayer flags fluttering against the backdrop of the green hills and the distant valley is calming. Take a respectful break here while observing the daily life of the nuns.
As the trail continues from here, you get deeper inside the park before arriving at Bishnudwar. The name translates to ‘Gate of Lord Vishnu’, a Hindu deity. You can see a sacred spot with a spring emerging from the rocks. And this is the source of the Bishnumati River. It’s a powerful moment to stand at the origin of a river that gives life to the valley. Furthermore, you will also find a small shrine of Lord Vishnu.
After spending time at Bishnudwar, retrace your steps, enjoying the downhill walk back past Nagi Gompa and through the forest to the Panimuhan gate. Your private vehicle will be waiting for you.
Kathmandu Elevation: 1,400m
Shivapuri Peak Elevation: 2,732m
Elevation Gain: 1,332m
Hike Duration: 6 to 8 hours (round trip)
For those with a full day and a desire for a more immersive adventure, the hike to Baghdwar is an unforgettable journey to the very heart of Shivapuri.
The Baghdwar hike follows the same initial path as the Bishnudwar route. You begin at Panimuhan in Budhanilkantha and then ascend through the pine and rhododendron forest. The first rest stop along the route is at the tranquil Nagi Gompa.
After soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the nunnery, the path diverges. Instead of traversing towards Bishnudwar, you continue on the main trail, climbing upwards. Finally, you arrive at Baghdwar, one of the most sacred sites in the entire region. The name translates to ‘Tiger’s Gate’. At the same time, this is also the source of the Bagmati River, the holy river that flows near the Pashupatinath Temple.
Reaching Baghdwar feels like stepping into a hidden sanctuary. There is also a small cave and a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, another Hindu deity. This area is surrounded by prayer flags and tridents.
Those with extra energy can continue a short but steep climb to Shivapuri Peak (2,732m), the park’s highest point. From the top, the forest opens into sweeping views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal. You can see their summits covered in snow and gleaming above the green forests.
After that, retrace your steps down through the forest. By the time you reach Budhanilkantha again, the day feels complete. After all, you have been a part of Shivapuri day hike, which is a balance of nature, culture and accomplishment.

Formally known as Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, it is a protected area in Kathmandu’s crown. It is located 12 kilometers north of the city center. The main gateway to this area is at Budhanilkantha and that is easily accessible.
Gazetted in 2002, the park covers 159 square kilometers. And it forms a protective barrier of lush hills on the valley’s northern fringe.
The park is not only a hiker’s destination. It is important ecologically, as well. The park serves as a critical water catchment area and protects the primary sources of the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers. The water from these rivers supplies millions of liters of fresh drinking water to the valley’s inhabitants.
In addition, Shivapuri is a sanctuary for the spiritual experience. It is home to the tranquil Nagi Gompa (a Buddhist nunnery), Bishnudwar (the source of the Bishnumati River) and Baghdwar (the source of the Bagmati River).
Likewise, the forest area here is rich in biodiversity. The forests transition from subtropical at the base to temperate forests higher up. This creates a diverse habitat for a stunning variety of flora, including pine, oak and rhododendron trees. They set the hills ablaze with color in the spring. It’s also a haven for wildlife. While hiking, it’s common to hear the calls of over 300 bird species, and quiet hikers may spot barking deer, wild boar or rhesus monkeys.
This is the premium season for hiking in Nepal. That is because autumn (September-November) arrives after the monsoon has cleared the air. As a result, you can hike on crisp and fresh days.
This means you can have the best and clearest views of the Himalayas. The trails are dry. And the temperatures range between 10°C and 20°C, making it comfortable for hiking. Add to that the forest that glows in golden hues. This time of the year is perfect for clear photos at Baghdwar and peaceful walks to Nagi Gompa. The panorama from Shivapuri Peak is unbeatable.
This is the second-best season if you want to hike on the trails of Shivapuri. The weather is warm as temperatures are usually between 15°C and 25°C in the spring months of March, April and May.
The forests feature blooming rhododendrons that paint the hills red and pink. Prevalence of stable weather means the trails are safe and you can enjoy vibrant bird activities. Views are excellent, though occasional haze may soften distant peaks.
This time is great for families and nature lovers wanting color and comfort. In addition, waterfalls near Bishnudwar flow strongly — perfect for refreshing breaks.
Winter Shivapuri day hiking is good if you love clarity. Days are sunny, skies are deep blue and Himalayan views are stunning during winter (December-February).
The temperatures drop to around 5°C and 15°C. It can be colder at Baghdwar, so pack warm layers. But the perk is that the trails are quiet, the air is pure and snow dusts higher ridges.
Thus, this time is the best for fit hikers who are seeking solitude and sharp panoramas. Early starts beat the chill. Also, hot tea at the monastery warms the soul.
You should hike during the monsoon season only if you love green drama. Hills turn emerald, waterfalls roar, but trails get muddy and leech-filled in June, July and August.
In addition, clouds often hide views and rain is frequent during this period. Thus, the monsoon Shivapuri day hike is not ideal for clear photos or easy walks.
However, you can attempt this hike if you are an experienced hiker with rain gear and want lush and wild vibes.
It is one of the most accessible treks from Kathmandu, yet the hikers need to understand its demands. The difficulty is not uniform as it directly depends on the trail you choose.
The Bishnudwar route is moderately difficult. Thus, it is ideal for beginners, families and anyone with a standard level of fitness.
It is manageable because the path is well-defined. Also, this trail involves a steady and gradual ascent. Therefore, if you are comfortable walking for 4 to 5 hours with uphill sections, then it is a possible hike.
The Bagdwar route can be called moderately challenging because the trail is significantly longer and involves a more strenuous and sustained climb after Nagi Gompa.
That means you need good stamina to handle the 6 to 7-hour round trip and the higher elevation gain.
So, this option is ideal for those with a good level of physical fitness. It can be a piece of cake for those with previous hiking experience in similar terrain.
For the Shivapuri day hiking, no advanced technical training is needed. However, some basic preparations will make your day much more comfortable:
Physical: A good baseline of cardiovascular fitness is beneficial. If you live a relatively active lifestyle or engage in regular walking or jogging, you’ll be well-prepared for the Bishnudwar route. For the Baghdwar hike, try to include some stair-climbing or longer walks in your routine a week or two prior.
Mental: This is a day to disconnect and enjoy. The main mental preparation is to be patient with the uphill climb. It’s not a race. And our guides will help you find a steady and comfortable pace. Prepare to be immersed in nature, enjoy the silence of the forest and have a positive mindset, even when the trail gets steep. Staying hydrated and fueled is also key to keeping your energy and spirits high.
A day on a hike means you want to enjoy the views and not fuss with your bag. Here’s what you should always bring:
- A comfy 20 to 30L daypack — big enough for everything, light on your back
- Good hiking shoes with ankle support and grip for those rocky bits
- At least 2 liters of water in a reusable bottle or bladder. Stay hydrated!
- Energy snacks: Trail mix, granola bars and a banana — they offer a quick fuel for the climb
- Sun protection: Wide hat, sunglasses and strong sunscreen. The sun hits harder up there, even on cloudy days
- Light rain jacket or poncho. Afternoon showers are fast in the hills
- Your camera — those Himalayan peaks and monastery moments are too good to miss
- Optional but awesome: Binoculars for spotting birds, trekking poles for steadying on the downhill
Everyone needs a permit to enter the Shivapuri National Park, and it is the rule. Fees depend on your nationality: Nepalis pay a small amount, SAARC folks a bit more and international visitors the highest.
Don’t worry about the details or lines, though. When you hike with Radiant Treks, we cover the fee in your package and let your guide sort the ticketing. Just show up ready to explore. But if you are curious about the rates, here are the details:
Nepali citizens: NPR 100/day per person
SAARC nationals: NPR 600/day per person
Other foreigners: NPR 1000/day per person
No overnight stay is required as this is a full-day trip starting and ending in Kathmandu. You will leave your hotel around 7:00 AM and return by around 5:00 PM.
You set off for the hike following your breakfast at your hotel. Along the hiking route, there are no eateries. So, you need to bring your own snacks for energy boosts. Water refills are free at safe taps inside the park. This is all about fresh air and simple, hearty fuel to keep you moving happily through the forest.
A guided hike is strongly recommended. Trails are marked but branch often. It is easy for you to lose a couple of hours without local knowledge. If you have a trained and experienced guide, then you need not worry about logistics. Add to that the correct pacing you will follow, as suggested by the guide. Similarly, they share stories about Nagi Gompa and river sources, spot wildlife and handle permits and timing.
On the other hand, solo hikers risk missing key viewpoints, running late, or facing leeches and rain without backup. Guided means zero navigation stress, richer experience and emergency support.
Solo is possible if you are experienced, speak Nepali and carry a map/GPS. But for the majority of visitors, guided is safer, smoother and way more rewarding.
- Lace up sturdy, grippy hiking boots with ankle support—those sneaky roots and loose gravel don’t play nice.
- Kick off the hike from 7:00 to 7:30 AM for cool breezes, golden lights, and Langtang views before the clouds crash the party.
- Stick with your guide, as they will pace you perfectly, point out secret streams and keep an eye out for wildlife.
- Pack at least 2L in a reusable bottle. Refill at safe taps; skip the stream water unless you treat it.
- Bring your own food; there’s no café, just you, the forest, and your sandwich.
- Layer up with a moisture-wicking tee, cozy fleece and a packable rain shell—even the weather is full of surprises.
- Keep it quiet on the trail and let birds and leaves be your playlist.
- At Nagi Gompa, cover up, whisper and skip the prayer hall photography.
- Bring your camera for sunrise magic and binoculars to zoom in on cheeky monkeys and pheasants.
- Leave no trace; stash every wrapper and scrap. Keep Shivapuri pristine and the trails cleaner.
