Serang Gumba Manaslu Circuit Trek

17 Days
No Fixed Departure Available!

The Serang Gumba Manaslu Circuit Trek is a 17-day journey around Mount Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 meters. It follows the classic Manaslu Circuit trek route, crossing the high Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. But this itinerary adds something most trekkers never get to see: a detour to Serang Gumba, a 500-year-old monastery tucked into a side valley of upper Gorkha.

Serang Gumba sits off the main trail, reached only by a dedicated side trip from Bihi. Most Manaslu Circuit itineraries skip it entirely, simply because they aren’t built to include it. This 17-day plan is designed specifically around making that detour worthwhile, rather than rushed.

Why Serang Gumba Is Worth the Detour

Serang Gumba’s official name is Sancen Rabten Norbuling Monastery, also known locally as the Nubri Monastery. It isn’t a minor stop along the way—it’s the central monastery among 12 gompas within Kyimolung, one of the sacred Beyuls, or hidden valleys of peace and happiness, prophesied by Guru Padmasambhava in the 8th century.

Legend has it that a lama named Gonpo Tsten traveled here from Kham in eastern Tibet with his three sons. Local villagers asked his youngest son, Nyime Cho Kyi Gyaltsen, to stay on as their village Lama. Eventually, he founded the monastery some 500 years ago. The title of Nubri Lama passed down that family line for five centuries, ending with the 11th Nubri Lama in 2006. Today, the monastery follows the spiritual guidance of the 4th Dodrupchen Rinpoche.

The monastery itself is a three-story stone structure built in traditional Tibetan style, its whitewashed walls symbolizing purity and its rooftop marked with golden ornaments. Prayer flags in five colors ring the grounds, and the mani wheels here carry mantras written in Ranjana script.

Serang Gumba also runs as an active Shedra, or scripture college, home to more than 100 monks and nuns — notably without the strict gender hierarchy found at some other monasteries. Nearby is a cave where the 11th-century Buddhist master Jetsun Milarepa is said to have meditated.

The surrounding valley still observes Shayagya, a pledge codified in 1921 that bans hunting, animal slaughter, and any harm to wildlife. That tradition is a big part of why the region still feels so untouched today.

Why Choose This 17-Day Itinerary

This trek package of Serang Gumba with Manslu Circuit runs for 17 days, and we have intentionally made it a little longer. The extra time buys two things that shorter itineraries tend to skip. First, a full trek preparation day in Kathmandu, where we handle permits, gear checks, and briefings while you rest and adjust to the time change. Second, it gives real breathing room around the monastery detour itself, so it never feels squeezed between two long trekking days.

We have also built in two acclimatization days later on the route — one at Samagaun and one before the Larkya La push. The pacing here is built for safety and comfort, not just speed.

Serang Gumba Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost

Trek cost depends on a few factors: group size, trip length, and what’s included in the package.

A few factors usually explain the price gap between operators:

  • Whether Kathmandu hotel nights and airport transfers are included
  • Whether a dedicated trek preparation day is built into the itinerary
  • Whether gear like a duffel bag or sleeping bag is provided, rather than left for you to rent separately
  • Group size, since private and small-group departures often cost more per person than larger fixed departures

At Radiant Treks, we customize your trek to fit your needs, and the final cost may vary depending on your preferences.

Serang Gumba Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty Level

This is a strenuous, high-altitude trek rather than a casual walk, for a few honest reasons:

  • Larkya La Pass sits at 5,106 meters, where oxygen levels drop and cold, early starts become unavoidable
  • Daily walking runs 5 to 8 hours over uneven, often steep terrain
  • Nights at Dharmashala and near the pass regularly drop below freezing
  • The region is remote, so evacuation, if it’s ever needed, takes time
  • No technical climbing skill is required, but solid fitness and prior trekking experience make a real difference

How Our 17-Day Itinerary Helps You Succeed

  • Strategic acclimatization: Two full rest days are built into the schedule, one at Samagaun and one before the Larkya La push.
  • Smart pacing around the detour: The Bihi-Serang Gumba-Gap stretch gets proper time, rather than being squeezed between two long trekking days.
  • Professional support: Your guide checks your pace and altitude daily and knows the Serang Gumba side trail well, not just the main Manaslu route.

Trek Prep Day Kathmandu

We spend a full day in Kathmandu fixing logistics before heading into the mountains of the Manaslu region. Your guide runs through a trek briefing and route overview with you, while your permits get finalized in the background.

Your gear also gets checked here — if you are missing a proper down jacket, sleeping bag, or trekking poles, this is when we sort it out. The day doubles nicely as recovery time from jet lag before the physical trekking begins.

Permits and Access

The Serang Gumba Manaslu Circuit Trek runs through a restricted area, since both the Manaslu region and the Annapurna side near Larkya La fall under government restrictions. This means you cannot hike here alone.

You will require three permits — Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). A licensed guide is compulsory as well, whether you are trekking in a group or going solo.

Don’t worry about sorting out these restricted-area requirements yourself — when you trek with us, Radiant Treks handles all of this as part of your booking.

Food and Accommodation

Comfort naturally changes as you move from Kathmandu into the mountains. Here’s what to expect on both ends of the trek.

Where You’ll Stay

In Kathmandu, you will stay in a comfortable three-star hotel with hot showers, Wi-Fi, and breakfast included on arrival and departure days. On the trail, teahouses run from Machha Khola through the upper villages — cozy wooden lodges lower down, giving way to simpler rooms and shared bathrooms as you climb.

At Serang Gumba, you will stay at the monastery’s own guesthouse, simpler than a standard teahouse but part of what keeps the visit genuinely authentic.

At Dharmashala, the most basic stop on the route, rooms have no electricity, so a headlamp and a warm sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C really do matter here.

What You’ll Eat

Meals are full-board and mostly Dal Bhat, noodles, soups, and momo on the lower trail, though menu options thin out the higher you climb.

Above Namrung, we recommend sticking to vegetarian food and Dal Bhat, since meat is often transported without refrigeration.

Serang Manaslu Circuit Transportation Guide

Ground transport to and from the trailhead is included in your package, using a mix of public bus and shared jeep. You will travel between Kathmandu and Machha Khola at the start, then back from Goa or Tilche at the end

Each leg of this journey is around 7 to 8 hours over increasingly rough roads. For more comfort, a private jeep upgrade is available for groups of 2 to 5 at an additional cost.

Guides, Porters, and Group Size

A licensed guide is mandatory on this trek, since the restricted area permit requires one. Beyond the paperwork, your guide manages your pace, monitors altitude, and navigates the Serang Gumba side trail itself.

A porter is optional but highly recommended, carrying up to around 15 kg, so you only need to walk with a light daypack.

Solo travelers are welcome too. Under current permit rules, the earlier minimum group size of two trekkers no longer applies, so you can trek alone as long as you are accompanied by a licensed guide.

If you would still prefer company, we can either join you on an existing departure or arrange a private trek with just your guide. Just let us know your dates.

Why Trek Serang Gumba With Manaslu Circuit With Radiant Treks?

  • We never rush acclimatization. Skipping rest days isn't a shortcut we take, even if it means a longer trip.
  • We handle our logistics. We don't outsource to the cheapest local operator. Sleeping bags, jeep bookings, and lodge arrangements stay under our control.
  • Our porters are insured and given proper mountain boots and warm gear. We pay them fairly.
  • Pricing stays transparent from the start. Meals, permits, hotel nights, and transport are covered as agreed. No surprise add-ons once you are on the mountain.
  • Our guides know this specific route, not just the general Manaslu Circuit. That includes the Bihi-Serang Gumba trail, which not every guide has actually walked.
  • We arrange every required permit in advance — the Restricted Area Permit, MCAP, and ACAP.
  • Airport pickup, the drive to Machha Khola, and the return from Tilche are all built into the package. Your teahouse stays and meals are arranged from day one. You are never negotiating prices or stuck with limited options in an unfamiliar village.
  • A porter carries your duffel bag. You only need to walk with a light daypack.
  • Guides carry a first-aid kit and monitor altitude throughout the trek. If evacuation is ever needed, we help coordinate it.
  • Trips can run as a small group departure or as a fully private trek. It depends on what pace and setup work for you.
  • Once you confirm your dates, we handle the rest of the planning before you land in Kathmandu.
  • Our senior guides bring genuine route experience. Some have led treks through the Manaslu region for well over a decade.
  • Guides are also briefed on Serang Gumba's cultural and religious significance, not just trail logistics. The monastery stop gets explained properly, not just walked past.
